Demography

Population 
The 2010 National Census on Population and Housing shows that Banate has a total population of 29, 543 excluding Barangay Fuentes (a contested Barangay between the Municipality of Banate and Municipality of Anilao), wherein 14, 440 or 49% is composed of male and 15, 103 or 51% is composed of female. However, including Barangay Fuentes, it has a total population of 30, 231. Of the 30,231 total populations, 14,813 or 49% comprises the male while 15,418 or 51% comprises the female.

Population Projection
With the annual growth rate of 0.81 excluding Barangay Fuentes from a population of 29, 782 for year 2011 and 30, 739 by year 2015, within the 5 – year period, it will have an increase of 957. By year 2023 the population is expected to reach 32, 654 see Table 1 – Projected Population and Household (excluding Barangay Fuentes), Year 2010 – 2023. Based on the Table 1A – Projected Population and Household including Barangay Fuentes the annual growth rate of 1.038 from a population of 30, 545 for year
2011 it increase to 31, 800 in 5 years. The population is projected to 34, 310 by year 2023. This projection was based primarily from the 2010 Census Population and Housing including Barangay Fuentes results using geometric growth of the municipality and did not consider fertility, mortality and migration trends.

Household Size and Density
The 2010 Census of NSO excluding Barangay Fuentes recorded a total of 6, 348 households with an average household size for both urban and rural are 4.7 persons per household. The urban area composed of Poblacion, Alacaygan, Bularan, Carmelo, Talokgangan and Zona Sur has a total of 2,592 household and the rural area composed of Bariga, Belen, Bobon, De La Paz, Dugwakan, Juanico, Libertad, Magdalo, Managopaya, Merced, and San Salvador has 3, 756 households see Table 2 – Household Population Urban and Rural Barangay and Average Household Size excluding Barangay Fuentes. The 2010 Census of Population and Housing including Barangay Fuentes recorded a total of 6, 486 households with an average household size for both urban and rural are 4.7 persons per household. The urban area has a total household of 2,592 and the 12 rural barangays has a total household of 3, 894. See Table 2A – Household Population Urban and Rural Barangay and Average Household Size including Barangay Fuentes With the 12 barangays in the rural areas Barangay San Salvador having the highest number household of 608.

Population Density
The proportion of the population of the barangay over the area of barangay was gathered to get the barangay population density and classified into urban and rural areas. In 2010 the urban barangays have a gross urban density of 19.51 compared to the 12 rural barangays with the gross rural density of 3.94. The barangay of Bularan has the highest population density of 173.98 in urban area while the barangay of Fuentes has the highest population density of 126.24 in rural areas see Table 3 – Population Density and Built – up Density, Year 2010 Marital Status Based on Table 4 – Household Population 10 years old and over by Age Group, Sex, Marital Status. It shows that greater population of the municipality are married with total of 10, 588 while single has 10, 169. About 1,174 are widow/er; 173 are divorced or separated; 841 are live – in and 51 is unknown. The proportion of unmarried persons is higher among the males which is 5,673 while married is 5, 267 while among the female the proportion of married persons is higher of which 5,
321 are married and 4, 496 are single.

Urban – Rural Distribution
Based on the 2010 National Statistic Census excluding Barangay Fuentes total population is 29, 543 and about 11,932 or 40.38% are living in the urban area which comprise Poblacion, Alacaygan, Zona Sur, Bularan, Carmelo and Talokgangan. On the other hand, there are 11 barangays composed of Bariga, Belen, Bobon, De La Paz, Dugwakan, Juanico, Libertad, Magdalo, Managopaya, Merced, and San Salvador in the rural area with a population of 17, 611 or about 59.61% of the total population.

The total population including Barangay Fuentes is about 30, 231 and 11, 932 or 39.47% are living in the urban area, while the rural area consists of 18,299 or 60.53% of the total population. Of the 12 barangays in the rural areas, Barangay San Salvador has the highest population of 3,039 while Barangay Dugwakan has the least population of only 639 and Barangay Fuentes, (a disputed barangay between the Municipality of Banate and the Municipality of Anilao) with a population of only 688 of the rural population since some are counted in favor of Anilao.

Age – Sex Distribution of Population
Based on the 2010 National Statistics Office Census there is 29, 543 total populations, female has a population of 14, 440 or 49% and the male is composed of 15, 103 or 51%. The ages ranging from 5 to 9 years old has the highest population of 3, 163 or 10.71% and the lowest percentage belongs to ages ranging from 80 and over with a population of 302 or 1.02%. See Table 5 – Projected Population by Age Group and Gender excluding Barangay Fuentes Male has a population of 15,103 or 51% with ages ranging from 15 – 19 having the highest population of 1, 576 or 10.44% and the lowest percentage belongs to ages ranging from 75 – 79 with a population of 98 or 0.65%. On the other hand, female population reached to 14, 440 or 49% with ages ranging from 5 – 9 having the
highest population of 1,516 or 10.50% and the lowest percentage belongs to ages also ranging from 80 and over with a population of 193 or 1.34%.

This simply shows that the 2010 population survey of National Statistics Office has more men than women.

Literacy Rate
According to the Comprehensive Population Data Banking and Management Commission year 2011, the Literacy rate of Banate was 94%. Of the 24, 605 total population of 10 years old and over 12,495 or 51% comprises the male while 12,110 or 49% comprises the female. There are more male literate which consist of 11,761 or 49.5% compare to female which is 11,528 or 49.5%. See Table 6 – Literacy Rate of the Population 10 years Old and Over by Sex

Religion
Based on the Table 7 – Religious Affiliation by Sex. The majority of the Banatenhons are Roman Catholic which consist of 23,763 or 76.37% followed by the Philippine Independent or Aglipayans with 4, 782 or 15.37%, Baptist consist of 1,938 or 6.23%, Inglesia ni Kristo with 271 churchgoers or 0.87%, Protestants consist of 249 or 0.80% and other religious sects like United Church in the Philippines, Jehovah’s Witness, Seventh Day Adventist, Islam, etc. This is consisting of 111 or 0.35%.

Labor Force
From the Data of 2011 Labor Force which totaled to 21, 424 about 10,146 are employed and 11,278 are unemployed. There are 6,758 or 62.2% male and 3,388 or 32.1% female were employed. About 4,109 or 37.8% male and 7,169 or 67.9% female were unemployed. There are 6,747 or 49.45% are male and 6,896 or 50.55% are female ranging from ages 15 years old and over. Of the 13,643 a total of 7,886 are employed; 5,239 of these are male and 2,647 are female, while 532 are unemployed but economically active. On the other hand a total of 5,225 are not in the labor force or not economically active; 1,243 of these are male and 3,982 are female.
